ঐ সকল লোকের উপর হজ্জ করা ফরজ যারা স্বাধীন, প্রাপ্ত বয়স্ক, সুস্থ মস্তিস্ক ও সুস্থদেহের অধিকারী। যখন তারা পথের খরচের উপর সক্ষম হয় আর তা বাসস্থান ও অন্যান্য প্রয়োজনীয় জিনিস থেকে এবং ফিরে আসা পর্যন্ত আপন পোষ্য পরিজনের খোরপোষ থেকে অতিরিক্ত হয়, আর পথও নিরাপদ হয়।

হজ্জ ফরয হওয়ার পর তা সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সেই বৎসরই আদায় করা ওয়াজিব। বিনা ওজরে দেরী করা গুনাহ। ছেলে মেয়ের বিবাহ শাদী দেয়ার জন্যে বা বাড়ি তৈরী করার জন্যে বিলম্ব করা কোন গ্রহণযোগ্য ওজর নয়। শেষ বয়সে হজ্জ করব- এরূপ ধারণাও ভুল। বরং বয়স থাকতে হজ্জ করতে গেলেই হজ্জের ক্রিয়াদি ভালভাবে আদায় করা সহজ হয়।

হজ্জ একটি অন্যতম ফরজ ইবাদাত। হজ্জ পালনের মাধ্যমে আল্লাহর নির্দেশ পালন হয়ে থাকে। আল্লাহ তায়ালা সামর্থবান মুসলিমের উপর হজ্জ ফরজ করেছেন । কুরআনে এসেছে, ‘এবং সামর্থ্যবান মানুষের উপর আল্লাহর জন্য বায়তুল্লাহর হজ্জ করা ফরয। আর যে কুফরী করে, তবে আল্লাহ তো নিশ্চয় সৃষ্টিকুল থেকে অমুখাপেক্ষী’। ( সূরা আলে ইমরান-৯৭)

হজ্ব করার শক্তি-সামর্থ্য ও অর্থ-বিত্ত থাকার পরও যে ব্যক্তি হজ্ব করে না তার সম্পর্কে হাদীস শরীফে কঠোর হুমকি প্রদান করা হয়েছে। ওমর ইবনুল খাত্তাব রা. বলেন-

من أطاق الحج فلم يحج فسواء عليه مات يهوديا أو نصرانيا.

যে ব্যক্তি হজ্ব করার সামর্থ্য রাখে, তবুও হজ্ব করে না সে ইহুদী হয়ে মৃত্যুবরণ করল কি খৃস্টান হয়ে তার কোনো পরোয়া আল্লাহর নেই।-তাফসীরে ইবনে কাসীর ১/৫৭৮
